V for vendetta by Alan Moore is a graphic novel but was released as a series of volums as well with beautiful artwork. The graphic novel has coloring which looks ugly, the volumes reetained the charm of the B+W artwork. if you can find a copy of them, grab 'em :D
Neil Gaimans stuff is great too, I second that choice!
Also, Dark Knight Returns is fantastic! These people have rgeat suggestions, just buy them all :D

Anything by Neil Gaiman. If he doesn't have one yet, I recommend the Sandman series. This is a very interesting fantasy comic which is both very entertaining and very thought provoking. Its not too heavy for an adolescent.
There are seven graphic novels all in all which are listed in the Wikipedia article on "The Sandman". My favorites are the ones entitled "Brief Lives" and "Seasons of Mist".
The issue "Midsummer's Nights Dream" (found in Dream Country) won the World Fantasy Award in 1991.

The Complete Dick Tracy Vol 1 by Chester Gould. Far superior to the Disney movie, this series starts out exciting and only gets better as it progresses. If they read it from cover to cover, I guarantee your lucky gift recipient will be champing at the bit for Vol 2 (due out in Feb. 2007)!

Go with the Ultimate Spider-man or Fantastic four collection--a volume of each is around $14.
The "Dark Knight returns" or "Kingdom Come" are truely masterpieces from a few years ago.
