My job is transferring me to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area...what is there to do and see in the area? And also, what are the people like? How does the culture differ from other parts of the States?

I grew up there and it's a wonderful place. Lakes and woods everywhere, very clean air (people from that area are the longest-lived in the country), gorgeous seasonal changes, and a lot of culture, from Dinkytown by the University where Bob Dylan performed before he even went to New York, to the Walker Art Center, the Guthrie Theater, and so on. There are also lots of distinctive neighborhoods that are more like small towns in themselves.

The people are very friendly and down to earth. They also mind their own business, and it's considered uncouth to "blow your own horn" or ask how much someone makes, for example. If you listen to Prairie Home Companion you'll get a pretty good idea of what they're like, as a matter of fact. If you're from New York you'll experience some culture shock, because they're not nearly as aggressive as out there, and they talk more slowly. You'll notice an accent, too, which is taken to extremes in the movie Fargo, however folks in the country do talk that way.

The cities aren't exactly twins, though. St Paul is conservative and Catholic while Minneapolis is the young, progressive, mostly Lutheran city. People who live in either place don't often visit the other, although that's changing.

I don't know much about what is to do there but I had to drive up there from lower Wisconsin for a day and night and it was one of the best cities I have ever been to. Despite what others say it is actually very clean for a big city. I didnt really have much time to do anything extra while I was there, I had somthing to do at the Target Center that night, but I just have to say that the Mall Of America is very overrated. Before hand I had planned to visit just on like a weekend trip and would have been so bored. I went with my mother and we walked in and just walked right out. It was so loud, there where little kids just running around everywhere and just totally over rated. I would never go there again.

It's like pairing of quantum particles. The twins always instantly know what the other's state is, and instantly change-faster than the Speed of Light! With an ordinary matting of two Burgs, there comes to be a brood of Suburbs.!LOL

Oh and to the Me guy down there, you have to go to MOA when it is not busy, hense (not on the weekend when tourists are there) But i do agree, its just a big shopping mall with alot of stores every other place has, I guess its just the idea, you really have to look there for MOA's unique quirky things.

Mall of America will definitely keep you occupied. I spent over four hours in there and still did not see everything in one day. I had to go back three more times to see everything.
