I've tried going into Control Panel, and then into Sounds and Audio Devices. All it says is that there is no Audio device, and does not give me an option to click on anything. My speakers are plugged in and have power. They were working fine a couple of hours ago. I had a problem with the computer while loading a program, and had to shut down several times. Now, I get no sound no matter what I do.

Try restore your computer back to an earlier restore point with system restore. If that does not work, then go into your control and double-click on the system icon. Then click on the hardware tab and click on the device manager button. In the device manager, look for your audio card and delete it.

Reboot and let windows find your audio card again and reinstall the drivers.

The drivers for your sound card are messed up.Goto Control Panel.Performance and Maintenance then System.Click the Hardware tab. Then the Device Hardware tab.Look for Sound,Video and Game Controllers.Click the plus sign beside it.Right click on any listings that is for sound.Click update driver.
If this dons't work search your computer makers web site.On the site look for support. It will ask for the model number.Look for drivers for your sound card drivers.Download and install them.
Hope this helps

To display the volume control icon in the notification area Open "Sounds and Audio Devices" in Control Panel. On the Volume tab, under Device volume, select the Place volume icon in the taskbar notification area check box. Notes To open Sounds and Audio Devices, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Sounds and Audio Devices. If your sound card volume can be changed using software, a speaker icon appears in the notification area. You can change the volume by clicking the icon and adjusting the slider.

Is the volume icon gone from the taskbar near the clock?? I can tell you how to get that back. Also, I assume you've tried restarting since the problem.
