I put things on layaway, all through the year to prevent that happening to me........Its not to late to put a few things away and pay them off.
And after Xmas, you can start preparing for next year so that the same thing doesnt happen again, it just takes a bit of organisation and planning.
Also you could start a Xmas Club bank account, and bank a few dollars each week, and get the money out in November to buy all the pressies.

If your children are old enough to be told about you and your wife being Santa, explain that they will not be able to have the x-mas that you know that they were expecting but to ask for things in a certain price range and that you will be able to get one or maybe two of the gifts that they mentioned but not a whole lot and you and your wife could just do something nice for each other such as a foot massage or if you do want to exchange something try exchanging special cards that express how you feel, it's not what you give but the thought behind it.

Christmas really isn't about the presents when it comes to kids; it's about the excitement leading up to it, the traditions you indulge in, and the fond memories you make. Do things with your children- if you can't afford a tree, make decorations for a tree outside or the house; pop popcorn and string it so the birds have a Christmas treat; bake and decorate cookies; make and use an Advent calender, tell stories- those are the things they will remember and cherish long after they have grown up and have their own children.

Go to the Salvation Army and register for a food basket and Christmas gifts.
Have your family draw names for each other so that everyone is buying one gift and everyone is opening one gift. Have each family member make something for the others or do a favor for the person's name they drew.
Do a family craft, have everyone make ornaments to give away to a nursing home. Go caroling. Ask your pastor for a few bucks to help you get by.
There are lots of options out there.

You can register the children at many charities and they will help you get the children a little something for Christmas. You can also sign up with your local Food Shelter about food if you have not money for food. Also see the Pastor or Minister at your church for help.

If you are just worried about the kids see if it isn't too late to ask the salvation army or the angle tree sponsors if you can include your children. If they are old enough you could try explaining the problem with little or no detail. Hope this helps.
