on these TBI motors you have to disconnect the Electronic Spark Timing connector. i know on my 88 K5 it was a light brown connector on the firewall near the distributor. if you dont disconnect this, you can retard or advance the distributor and the ECM will just keep on compensating for it.

ok well heres the problem with most cars of that erea the hormonic balancer shifts and the timing marks arnt always dead on, im assumiing that it is a 350 or a 305, timing setting should be about 12 degres before top dead center but the ay to do it with out the light concidering the marks moved is pop the hood get a flash light climb inside the egnin compartment and look all the way on the back of the motor find the distriburator its round in the back center of the motor and has 8 wires coming out of it look right below it there should be a bolt holding it down should be 9/16 or 1/2 inch losten that bolt get out frim under the hood and start it up turnt he dis twards the pass side with it runing to advance it when the rpms sound good or its 1000 rpms tighten the bolt up and go for a ride get the engin nce and hot and park it in the driveway, shut the motor off and try to restart it if it sound like th bater is dead losten the bolt and turn it jst a hair to the drivers side, keep on doing this till it starts normal then tigthen the bolt up and blam thats the most advanced you can get without a timing light

Disconnect the timing connecter, set timing to 0 degrees, rehook the wire and go.c

disconnect vacuum advance, hook up timing light make sure vehicle is at normal operating temp loosen distributor hold down and using the timing light check to see where your timing mark is and adjust
