Ok so i have pretty much built the computer back from scratch. I kept the orginal motherboard that was in the computer and the orginal processor. Not sure what the motherboard is but its an AMD processor. I put new PCI cards, Ram, and a new Harddrive. when i went to install XP it starts like its going to install then says checking your system configurations or Checking your system settings...and then just sits there..forever... i have waited for 2 hours thinking maybe its just checking everything but i doubt it..any help...This isnt my first computer build so i know everything is connected right. im wondering if maybe the motherboard is fried or processor is fried.

2 hours make it seem to me that some piece of Hardware is faulty. I have use this method several times.

Remove an item of hardware you don't need. ie Sound card, or Network card, USB Devices. Graphics card, if it has on board Graphics.

If it hangs, remove something else. It works you've found your problem.

Of course replace anything which isn't considered problematic

the only thing i could think of is that maybe either the ram or the pci cards that you installed might not be compatible with the mother board. or it could be just a loose connection. that happened to me when i build my pc and it just wouldnt boot up. all i did was tear it apart completely and rebuild it step by step and it worked like a charm. so check the manual for your mother board and make sure the ram u used are compatible.

Definitely hardware related Most likely your ram. But i one had that problem and it was my cd-rom drive had gone bad so you never know.
1st try replacing new ram with the old ram and see if that works.
if not then you have to take a step by step process
remove everything but the video card and ram then start connecting things one at a time
hard drive
then cd Drive
you get the picture
