The roads represent choices we make in life. He is saying to avoid following the path most people take, to go your own way and do your own thing.

Even in the Bible there is a verse that says "Strive to enter by the narrow door," which essentially means the same thing.

The road symbolizes a choice of life direction. When you choose one life direction, another is closed to you.. He takes the less trodden road, i.e. the one only a few people take. This is the route of the artist and individual, rather than the well trodden hum drum road that most of us take.

of course it's not about a road. It's about life. Do you follow what others do always? Or do you chose to do things a little differently?
