I mean like something simple that I might have laying around somewhere in the house. Any ideas? Thanks a bunch.

YOu maybe able to get a case for it but you can't get rid of scratches

You can't. I know how you feel I had the same problem with mine and it does my head in. I fixed mine by purchasing a Louis Vuitton cover that sticks to it and covers all of the marks and scratches.
They have all sorts of designs that you can get. They are availible on ebay and are about $3 :)

You can use a hammer...to bash the iPod to pieces...then buy a new one.
Once you scratch it...you scratched it. There is no going back. Be more careful next time.
