An orthodox Jew is a Jew that strictly follows all the laws of the religion. A non-orthodox Jew is the one who can for example pray from home and not be in the synagogue every week.

Orthodox Judaism is the oldest and most traditional type of Judaism.

Other large groups include Reform and Conservative.

The major difference between Orthodox and Reform/Conservative is their view of the Torah. Orthodox say that the five books of Moses were given directly by G-d with an oral explanation.

Reform say that the entire Torah is man made.

Conservatives say something in between saying that much of the Torah is divine but was rewritten latter and that the Oral Torah is man made.

as a result Orthodox hold to Jewish law. While Reform dose not and Conservative have their own brand.

This is why Orthodox Judaism dose not recognize the conversions of Reform and Conservative.

and Conservatives often do not recognize Reform conversions.

listen from the way your sounding your probably converting for a boy friend or a fiance I would strongly suggest that you study Judaism indepth (more than those classes give you) before you do anything. This is your life you should not change your religion because someone else wants you to.

I'm sorry I don't get what you're saying.

Okay I'm going to try to help you out. There are 9 divisions in the Jewish religion Orthodox, Conservative, Reform Reconstructionist, Liberal, Karaite, Alternative, Renewal, Messianic. But I don't know the difference between the synagogues because I have only been to a messianic synagogue which is 'Jewish-Christian' and Orthodox which is I guess what you would call traditional Jewish the difference was one was more church like but still a considered a synagogue and the other was you're tradition synangogue which I'm guess you know what that looks like. But the one I liked most and felt more welcomed in was the Messianic because it was more live and not so 'dead' feeling plus it has christian teachings which is what I brought up on so I understood it more.

So I hope my 2 cents helped you out.
