Rap music is a horrible thing today. The artists of today rap about their money, ice on their wrist and spinning rims. It's a bunch of ****. Now, hip hop on the other hand, talk about true life events and what's happening in the world today. Hip hop artists, such as, 2PAC, talks about how the world isn't as pretty as most of the world sees it. He talks about things that have happened in his past and about others history. He is an icon to this day, even after he has been deceased for 10 years, to all types of people. Even to those who are not familiar with his work. He has touched the lives of many people showing them that things DO get better and that life ISN'T fair for the most of us. But ya gotta keep ya head up...

It seems that a lot of people here are confused (although a few people were close). Here's the straight answer...

"Hip hop music" and "rap music" mean virtually the same thing. However, some people associate the term "rap" with the more mainstream variety of the genre (which nowadays often includes R&B or pop elements) and reserve the term "hip hop" for the variety of the genre that stays closer to the roots of hip hop music (i.e. - speaking on social and/or political issues, storytelling, bragging about one's lyrical skills while roasting another MC, etc.).

But to be really specific, hip hop itself is a culture. Rap music or hip hop music (specifically, MCing) is just one element of that culture. The other elements of the culture are graffiti, breakdancing (aka - breakin'), DJing and a more recently added element, beatboxing.

p.s. - And "Daniel R," please...never mention A Tribe Called Quest and 50 Cent in the same sentence again (unless of course, you're comparing polar opposites). That's borderline blasphemy in the hip hop world - lol. A Tribe Called Quest is definitely hip hop, but "Fiddy?" I think not.

Hip Hop is a cultural thing and rapping is part of it. The two terms are related and often interchangable. Hip Hop technically uses rap to vocalize the moods and emotions of the people in the culture. Hip hop contains in it the rapping, dancing and the styles of sounds used in this type of music.

Rap is like beastie boys and run-dmc. Snoop Dogg is rap. Eminem is rap. Hip hop is like tribe called quest or 50 cent. Hip hop flows together and has a different beat. I would have to say old De la Sol or EPMD were like the earlier form of hip hop. Hip hop is New York and was pretty much made in the city. I guess it's a difference in rhyme styles. Kind of like the different types of rock. You know like grunge rock or alternative rock or heavy metal. Its just hip-hop is New York beats laid down over old school tracks, representing a whole new flow of urban linguistics.

That is like asking the difference between cow and horse manure. It makes little difference when someone puts a hot steamy plate of it in front of you, hands you a spoon, puts a gun to your head and says, EAT!
