There are WAY better guitar players than those that you will typically hear on the radio.

Check out Berelli Lagrene. This French player comes from the Django Reinhardt tradition of jazz guitar playing. Amazing chops and a truly beautiful sense of musicality. Can play electric bass as good as Jaco Pastorious (no joke).

Then there is Rodney Jones from NYC. Impressive chops and a soulful, original approach. Very creative; a true artist.

Others to check out are Kurt Rosenwinkel, Allan Holdsworth, Bobby Broom, Pat Metheny. There are too many to name.

Though for the best player in the world, I'd say it's a tie between Rodney Jones and Berelli Lagrene.

It's a matter of personal opinion. There is no way to determine who is the "greatest" simply because of all the different styles. Besides, music is ART, not a SPORT. It's a form of expression, not competition. Plus, there are so many great guitarists out there alive and dead that you really can't choose one, not to mention that there's a lot of great guitarists who have yet to be "discovered" that would amaze people if given the opportunity. Anyway, if someone did try to determine "the greatest", you know that there would be a lot of people upset because there would be be lots of players overlooked, so what's the point. I feel it's best just to label a deserving player as being great and move on, which is what I'm doing now!

Juan Serrano - King of the Flamenco Guitar!

But Juan Serrano is more than just an incredibly gifted guitarist. He is also an exceptional and rare musical resource who can communicate his art on a very personal level unlike other great Spanish guitarists who normally only perform in a strict concert setting where the audience receives little orientation about flamenco from the artist. Serrano speaks both English and Spanish which enables him to give enlightening explanations during his performances that give his audiences a rare insight into flamenco. He has performed on major television and radio programs throughout the world. In addition, Serrano has authored several music books and videos distributed by Mel Bay Publications which instruct guitar players on the origins of flamenco and its techniques. He has also written Flamenco, Body and Soul, a history of flamenco for the aficionado published by the Press at California State University.

Dude that's impossible to answer. There are so many amazing guitarists in the world, and they each have their strengths. Eddie Van Halen, has amazing reach, and Jimi Hendrix's solos were, and still are, incredible.
Then you could talk about songwriting ability. Jimi Page's riffs are really sweet, and guys like Keith Richards and John Frutinesce are just all around awesome players.

Your question is a value call and impossible to answer, but great for discussion!

Did you know that Jimi Hendrix canceled one of his early concerts to go see Buddy Guy perform? They became friends and Jimi learned some riff techniques from Buddy.

Ever watch Bonnie Raitt's fingers on the fret board?

Hubert Sumlin
Robert Johnson
Eric Clapton
John Lee Hooker
Stevie Ray Vaughan
George Harrison
B. B. King
Joe Perry
Dime Bag
John Fogerty
Jimmy Page
Eddie Van Halen

I have to stop. My head is being to spin.

I don't think it's possible to narrow that down because there are different styles and each has its top 5 or so that are equal in talent.

I'd say probably Joe Satriani because he's so fast, makes excellent guitar music, and has an awesome style of playing. Plud, he played in the G3 concert I went to and blew me away, moreso than Steve Vai or Yngwie Malmsteen did.

I'd say my grandfather because he really was awesome but then again, you'd only hear him if you listened to big band.

In the world of rock and roll, my personal favorite is Roger Waters. He is so underated it hurts. I'd also have to add John Petrucci, Gary Hoey, and Steve Vai to the mix.

Wow, that's a tough one. Well, let's see...
Dimebag Darrell
Jimi Hendrix
Steve Vai
Yngwie Malmsteen
Eric Clapton
Kirk Hammett ( I can't spell)
Carlos Santana
BB King
That's on my personal top list because they are (in my opinion) the best of their style and time frame.
