Well, first of all, researching on wikipedia will not get you anywhere. You need to FIND an anime, watch it, and see if you like it or not.
Anime is Japanese Animation. The storylines themselves are usually based off of their mirror version in book form, which is called Manga (japanese graphic novel). Anime is just another form of entertainment. The storylines of the shows will vary from series to series. They are all categorized into different subjects. For example, one anime might be in the "fantasy" category while another might be in the "action" category. Anyone can get hooked onto anime, but it has to be the right series.
A person might love one anime, and hate another. It also depends on the persons preference. They might enjoy anime in japanese audio with subtitles, or they might enjoy a dubbed version (into whatever their main language is).
Anime is not just for youth and teens. Adults enjoy anime as well. As I have already said before, it depends on the series. All anime can not be the same, they all have different storylines. Anime can be rated from Everyone to Mature. So basically, you wouldn't see an adult watching an anime that is made to aim for the youth. And vice-versa when it comes to anime that aims for adult viewers.
Let me just clear up the whole "only geeks watch anime theory". People from different walks of life watch anime. Not just geeks. People who watch anime are watching it because they ENJOY the show. Not because its some cult where geeks have to watch it. Anime is for everyone, and every person on this planet can find an anime that they will like. It's because there are SO MANY different types of categories with millions of series, that you can not HATE every single anime out there. BUT I'd like to warn you that there are a lot of crazy fans in the Anime industry, and this is where people get the stereotype that EVERYONE who watches anime is a crazy fanatic. Which is obviously NOT true. But, of course, it is very hard to prevent. Anime is addictive, and in turn people will get addicted to certain series.
I for one love anime. I have been watching different anime series since I was a small child. So of course I will always stick up for it. Not because I am obligated to, but because I genuinely adore japanese anime (and manga too). I also love japanese music, and this is another factor that makes anime so unique. When you watch anime, you will always get a sense of the japanese culture that is fused into the series.
I love anime, and I hope you will give it a chance.
Here are some of my favourite anime (with link to summary):

while there is anime geared towards younger audiences like pokemon and digimon there are more serious anime like fullmetal alchemist, akira, elfen lied just to name a few that deal with death murder and anything else you would find in a serious live action movie or show just because its animated or anime doesnt mean that its for kids look at hayao miyazaki who has won an oscar for best animated film for spirited away and remember beauty and the beast although not anime it was the only animated film nominated for best picture ever i think if you were to give anime a try you might like it i used to hate it about 7 years ago and now i cant get enough my recommendation is to watch some good ones no dbz or pokemon those are for kids here's a little list to get you started
1. Akira - Classic movie that kind of kick started the whole anime movement in north america
2. Fullmetal Alchemist Series & Movie Conquerer of Shamballa - One of the best storylines you will ever see regardless of the medium
3. Elfen Lied - Very bloody and gory if you like that not to mention superb storyline
4. Neon Genesis Evangelion - Im not really into mecha but this show is great give it a try
5. RahXephon - Mecha again made by the same company that did Neon Genesis Evangelion very good
6. Naruto - Its about young ninjas and is a little on the younger side but still has adult themes
7. FLCL - Short 6 episodes anime that is nearly perfect a little on the bizarre side though
8. Anything by Hayao Miyazaki like My Neighbor Totoro and Howl's Moving Castle which you might have heard of already also Grave of the fireflies is really good and sad
9. Cowboy Bebop - Old school anime about bounty hunters
10. Inuyasha - An overall good anime about demons set in feudal japan
Hope this helps you some you can find out about all of these on wikipedia

It IS very popular among young boys because they like the action. The children's anime is pretty cheap and repettive, but the ones made for adults (no, I don't mean the porn ones) can very good. A lot of them are filled with passion and action and agnst... In America, animation is mostly only made for children, so they only translate the children's anime. In Japan, animation appeals to all ages. They don't aften bring the adult's anime to north america.
I love all forms of animation, including anime. I think that it is just as good as american animation. Some ways it's better, and some ways it's worse.

You couldn't be more wrong. Anime is so not all-kid material.
First of all.
Anime is fundamentally different from western cartoons. So it's not a case of how Spongebob Squarepants is also popular with adults.
Whereas most cartoons are targeted towards kids and tweens, anime has a vast variety of genres stretching from light humor to angst blood guts and gore. 98% of it, definitely not the childish material used for western cartoons. There is a world of chance that you'll find extreme explorations of the psychological mind on an anime than on a western show. Cartoon or not.
For those of you who think anime is all about giant robots or bug-eyed kids on adventures to catch animals (or pokemon), specifically tailored for kids, it's not. Even those robot anime people look down upon so much have a thicker plot than most bullcrap cartoons. Even most of the "kiddy" anime are supposedly too much for the western brat to digest.
Last but not least. Extensive research will get you next to nowhere, let alone little research on wikipedia.
So we come to our conclusion
Watch first. Judge later.

You can't expect to understand anime by researching it on the internet. You nedd to actually sit down and watch one from te beginning. I didn't really get what was so great about it either until I saw Princess Mononoke. It's nothing like a cartoon, either. I mean, sure, the characters are drawn, sometimes poorly, but the history behind every anime - even the crap-tastic ones like Xiolian Showdown, have amazing history behind them. Maybe it's just a Japanese thing, but I'm completely obsessed with anime, and will be until the day I die.

Its actually very popular among adults, prodominatly artists mostly because the animation, although i'm another one who doesn't understand all the fuss, is really good, props to anime artists, usually the styorylines of these 'cartoons' are definatly not for childrens eyes. The only anime i really like is Spirited Away and Initial D

It is geared for everyone from children to adults. In my opinion it is better than most American cartoons. Myself being in my late 20's I love anime (for the older crowd) because it more in depth with human realities and more mature. It's not for everyone, but it does have great story telling.
