Apparently they have to go thru some employee modification program.Police officers are like this too. From a certain point of view it's a necessity.

When you make that transition to supervisor you have to have a degree of separation from those you supervise. That doesn't mean ya gotta' be a power crazy asshole. But you do have to show your underlings(bad choice of words I know) that you don't show favoritism. When you're just a worker you can pick what coworkers you like and don't like......not when you make supervisor. It's all about being firm, fair and consistent. In time you'll hopefully be able to show your people you are the same person you always were only now, in addition you're a leader. It's a hard change to make and some just can't do it even though they try. Oh and of course some people are just assholes.

I think it has alot to with not being able to be friends and superiors. It would be a tough struggle and your now supervisor would have have a very difficult time doing their job properly. Some others, I would guess, let it go to their ego's, but I think for the most part, that would be being human. It's easy to understand why you'd be upset by it though. For the most part, be happy for your friends and know that you would want them to do the best job they can just as you would hope that same for yourself from them.

Supervisors have to get things accomplished, and the only mechanism they have at their disposal a lot of the time is the people who work under them. If you focus on doing a task you lose track of how everything is doing. Unfortunately that means listening to a lot of, he you dont want me to do that, I thought we where friends, and hey stop screwing me over, I thought we where friends. sad enough even if people dont say such things you still hear them, or see them in their eyes. If I where your supervisor, and you where my friend I would hope you would help me carry my new load of stress easier, and let me know that you are still there to help, not abuse my friendship.

Its a totally different relationship when you are the boss. You still like the same people but you have to treat everyone the same. Then again some of your former friends may try to exploit the friendship to get special treatment. That's not being a good friend.

Because if they appear to be friendlier to you, they can get in trouble for what appears to be playing favorites. A lot of stuff changes when you become a supervisor. Your co workers may complain.

With power comes responsibility so your former coworker is more focused on being fair and responsible than being friendly.
