I think most of the time they played 4-4-2 but it depends on the opponent as well. They can start in the first half with 4-4-2 but after substitution change the formation.

Usually they stick with 4-3-3 formation. Three players control the midfield with one striker assist by two sprinter wingers. But now with the arrival of Shevchenko and they already have Drogba, they played with 4-3-1-2 formation with Lampard played as attacking midfielder to support Drogba and Shevchenko.

4-4-2 with a midfield diamond consisting of Makelele, Essien, Ballack and Lampard. as this limits chelse's attacking options they sometimes revert to 4-4-2 with Robben and Cole/ Wright-phillips running down the flanks(side lines) to strech opisition and to deliver crosses to the strikers. this is very effective because players like Ballack and Lampard come bombing into the box by occasion.
