The parties (Democrat and Republican) vote for their candidate they want to represent them! The electoral college has a certain number of people according to the size of their state. It adds up to 536 and the candidate needs 270 votes to win. They try to get to get the higher populated states such as Florida, California, Ohio, and Texas so they win. I believe the voter's votes are factored in also.

Each political party chooses a candidate, usually by Primary Elections held between January and May. (Some parties just choose a candidate without a primary election.) These candidates are confirmed at their party Convention, at which time the candidate will pick a vice-presidental running mate. This sets the stage for the General Election.

Each state has a number of representatives to the Electoral College (electors) equal to their total number of Senators and House Representatives. At the General Election, each state takes a vote of the people to determine which party gets to select the electors. The electors meet in Washington and cast their votes. Most states (all but two or three) cast all their votes for the candidate who had the most votes in their state. There are a couple of states who divide their electors by the percentage of votes each candidate received.

Whoever gets the most votes in the Electoral College is the President. If there is a tie in the Electoral College, the issue is decided by the House of Representatives.

See the US Constitution for more details.

The President who gets elected is the one whose party can obliterate the other party with misleading and untruthful smear campaigns. It takes millions of dollars and a lot of votes from an uninformed, ignorant populace.
