Dalton was forced to amend Lavoisier's law of definite proportions when he discovered that sometimes the same two elements will join to form more than one compound such as CO and CO2.

Lavoisier said that elements combine in the same proportions by mass when forming compounds.

Dalton said that elements will combine in small whole number ratios by mass when forming compounds. By adding the part about the small whole number ratios he was able to explain multiple compounds of the same two elements.
