Most all of us have negative thoughts at one time or another. It is quite normal. Some of us go to an extreme in either direction. Thus, modern day science has created medicine to help us stay more at ease with our thoughts and emotions.

My advice is to seek professional advice! There is nothing wrong with this! It is widely accepted in todays society!

It is good for the both of you you that he is comfortable talking with you about his feelings. It is (IMHO) also somewhat rare to have this communication in this day between parent and child!

Me thinks a job well done thus far! Continue on!

What kind of bad thoughts you need to find out first. Then is he having these thoughts on a regular basis? It may be that he is feeling some guilt over something. Does he have a good adult male role model? If so, perhaps he would feel more comfprtable opening up to him. If you determine that it really is bothering him you might suggest some joint counseling. Luck to you!

maybe you should work out the origin of the bad thoughts and find some info on obessive/compulsive type stuff to see if you think that could be an issue
