I'm 13 almost 14, and my mom is really confused with who I am, and she's trying to turn me into another overly-optomistic idiot. She thinks my life is all blood, gore, poutiness, and sorrow... and it's not. I don't know what would give her such an idea, but it's just not. I haven't worn anything black in weeks, and she's constantly accusing me of trying to be "gothic" or whatever. I don't know what's got her so paranoid, but I'm not doing anything to myself that's going to hurt me now or in the future, but her comments on what I do and how I decide to show independence kind of do hurt. I'm not trying to live under any label. I'm just a teenager and with the kinds of things I've been through, I pretty well know that life's not all smiles and sunshine. I chose to live the StraightEdge lifestyle, and she even criticizes the X's. How can I let her know that I'm just trying to find out who I am, and that I'm definately not the person she's trying to force me to be?

omg...we should totally be friends i went through the same thing....i can tell that ur an AFi fan...me to AFi por Siempre...anyways....live ur life..the way u want...when need to have a long talk with ur mom...that's what i did...kinda.....cause i told my mom that i didn't want to live anymore...and she tried to understand me...and now are relationship is stronger than ever....but my sisters still think I'm satanic....cause the music i listen to ...u know emo/punk/goth/indie/alt rock....I also chose to live a sXe life....don't change...be who u were ment to be ....I'm here if u ever need a friend to talk...were like the same age...i'm 14...yeah soooo my email is

Mom's only want what is best for thier kids. Don't hold it against your Mom. Maybe try when things are somewhat calm between the two of you to start a conversation with her & tell her exactly how you feel without being confrontational. Talk in an even tone to her. If you start yelling, chances are the both of you will be yelling. Talk. Communication between a mom & a child is key. Good luck to you, sweetie.

Try to talk with your mom. She loves you, but teenagers can freak out even the best adults sometimes. I don't know why. See if you can genuinely listen to each other, as much as you talk to one another.Maybe if you do that you can air some of the major things that are concerning both of you, and then it is out in the open... Hopefully you can resolve the issues, that are troubling you. Good luck!

Well, you are a teen, but realize you are still a kid and you mom is just looking out for you. Best thing you can do is act how you want to be treated - talk to her honestly and openly about whats going on in your life and explain to her your choices. Once she knows that you are okay and that you are just finding yourself, she'll be more at peace knowing you aren't in trouble. Just keep in mind that your mom isn't the enemy and she just wants whats best for you, she just wants to stay a part of your life and be close to you.

tell her everything you just typed .. :) sometimes it takes awhile for parents to get it..because they want what's best for you...but just be yourself around her and that's the best you can do
