Could the term "racism" be used in this instance, even though the Japanese and the Koreans are both of the same race? Or is the term "racism" just used to mean discriminating against other ethnic groups in general? What if an American hated all people of Australian nationality, regardless of race--would he or she be considered a racist? If not, what would you call it?

It's all a matter of perspective. It depends on who you talk to. There definitely is discrimination against ethnic Koreans in Japan, but it's not rampant. It's not like the average Japanese hates Koreans. It's a complicated issue for some people. For example, if your grandparents were brought to Japan during wartime, your ethnicity may be Korean, but you and your parents were brought up in Japan, speak Japanese, etc. You may actually have to carry an alien registration card even though you were born in Japan. There was a phase a while ago where many Japanese women were in love with Korea. There was some romantic TV drama and tons of J-women started learning Korean and traveling there. They saw Korean men as romantic, Japanese men as nothing special. I would say that the average Japanese is fairly neutral about South Korea. North Korea, on the other hand is a bit disconcerting to many Japanese.

If a Japanese hated all Koreans that is racism. If someone hates a group of people not based on race, that is called bigotry.

This "racism" thing gets pretty sticky, especially when Mexicans call racist any American who favors securing the border. It has come to the point where I think the term "racist" is used by anyone who does not agree with someone else for whatever reason. So the whole business of calling this person or that person "racist" is all just a bunch of meaningless baloney if you ask me.

Race refers to the way a group of people defines itself or is defined by others as being different from others becasue of assumed innate physical characteristics. So, it is based on an anthropologic concept used to classify people according to physical characteristics, such as skin and eye color and the shape of their head, eyes, ears, lips and nose.

Anytime that an individual is discriminating against another on the basis of these characteristics then you can call it "racism".

However, culture is defined as the institutions, communications, values, religions, genders, sexual orientations, disabilities, thinking, etc. that an individual has.

Likewise, ethnicity is a culturally distinct population whose members share a collective identity and a common heritage.

Regardless of whether it is called racism or discrimination it is still a brand of hatred against another group. Now, whether it is in retaliation against the other group for a crime of the past against ancestors or even relatives or not, it is still hatred that is then carried on in her life.

Discrimination is what I would call it.

I think the Japanese can, and do hate people of other races. I know they have Japanese only sex clubs because they consider whites to be dirty.
