I get afraid when I'm home alone as well. We have a very scary, psychotic neighbor who sometimes says the voices tell him to kill people, and he lives right across from me, so even in daytime, I don't like being alone.

I'm really sorry you've had such a bad time since you've been over here, but this is one of the problems of being young and relatively poor in a foreign country - you tend to end up living in the worst places and you don't know your way around because the culture's different and you can't see how to make it different. Some British people who've gone to the US have had similar experiences. I really do recommend you find a way to move from where you are. I do understand the difficulty of jobs etc, but there are ways of finding places to live and jobs in nicer areas and with people you'd get on with. The best start is often to link into some network you can identify with - eg, people who play badminton (if you do), a drama group, whatever interests you. Some of these need you to be physically in the vicinity (e.g. if you play badminton, you need to be able to meet up physically!) but some don't. Begin to find a group that are 'your sort of people' and not your friend's sort of people. There IS a heavy binge-drinking culture among young people, but by no means all of them. You're the age of many of the university students, and Manchester has a massive student population that ranges from the druggies and drunkards through to people whose main interest is their studying, with all points inbetween. See what contacts you can make with groups that share an interest of yours there. And, I am 100% certain that there will be other young Americans in Manchester - you just need to find them. Google things, check out the American Studies department at the university. Please give the UK a better try than this. You could be meeting all sorts of people you'd find interesting and stimulating, you could be learning a lot about living in a different culture in a fun way - just don't stay stuck in a context you clearly loathe. It really is possible to find great people in Manchester (I have many friends there) and through networks to move elsewhere if that's what you decide. But you will have to make the effort to meet different people - no-one is going to come and find you.

I'm sorry you suffer this problem. I have a major anxiety problem and I know how you feel I can have a panic attack just sitting down. It is called panic attack. It means a certain sense of insecurity or fear. I'd advise you to see a doctor or a psychiatrist because I waited a while and it really got the best of me. Dont worry if it is as serious as needing medication it will help. Hope this is the answer your looking for

Human beings don't like to be alone - it's just our nature. Also, if you are in a big house alone that could be why you feel that way. Why not try getting a cat or a dog to keep you company in the house.

It happens, when you think about it too much, and after seeing a scary or horror movie (if you watched one). Maybe you have some type of phobia -- the unreasonable fear of being alone.

I get that some times. My imagination is always running away from me. Stay away from scary movies and horror stuff like that.

Either someone you heard has died in your house before or someone you know died recently that made you scared.. Dun worry. If you've not hurt anyone or do any bad deeds, they won't hurt you or disturb you...
