Profs always seem so focussed when they lecture. And they have to listen really carefully to students' questions, so they can give them a decent response. Do you really think they even notice attractive faces?

I'll pick the most thoughtful and detailed question as the best.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't notice the attractive students in class. When I lecture, I move around the room a lot, make eye contact, and ask (and answer) questions. It's like a long conversation with the group. So even though I may be focused on my material, I can't help but notice my students, attractive or otherwise. But sure, I notice who the attractive ones are.

In the nature of full discloure, though, I'm more likely to notice students who look truly engaged in the class--eyes bright, clearly listening and thinking, nodding now and then. So if you asked me who I notice (and pay attention to) most, it's those students.

You are precisely right about the level of focus required to lecture and to answer students' questions.

I can honestly say that I rarely notice whether a student (regardless of gender) is conventionally attractive. I am too busy doing other things.

In large lecture courses, I notice students who are paying attention, or asking good questions, or who, in terms of their facial expressions, seem confused or challenged.

In smaller seminar-type courses, where I get to know my students well, their looks are not the first thing I notice. I notice their level of preparation for class and their interest in the subject matter.

Having said all that, I should note that I *did* notice one exceptionally attractive student last semester. This student always sat in the front row of a huge lecture course, and took notes like crazy. The constant scribbling, with head down, is what first caught my attention. This student, although quite good-looking, and seemingly attentive, was evidently not blessed with brains, and got a D minus in the course. (Perhaps this student was furiously writing about something other than the course material.) :)

My hunch is that male professors probably notice attractive students more than female professors do. (Note the gender of most of the answerers here. Note that I am female.)

Of course I noticed attractive students. I was never disrespectful about it and never gave them special attention or favors that I wouldn't have given to anyone.

There is an old joke about a beautiful undergraduate who went to her professor and said (in a seductive voice) "Professor, I'll to ANYTHING to get an A in this class." The professor looked at her and said "Great! Do the work!" That was my philosophy.
