a lot of great answers. being a black person myself. i see racism all the time and its ugly. not only do you have to play at a high level on the field you have to endure a lot of injustice and ignorance. think about not being able to fight your detractors or say anything negative about them. anything he did or say could have set blacks back in baseball for years. he had to endure a lot and tolerate a lot of bigotry. basically its all about character and a higher belief in GOD. because he was blessed and GOD made sure no weapon formed against him had the opportunity to prosper. faith my brother was his greatest characteristic.

Jackie Robinson is my hero!
He first had to be a strong player. He was a shortstop that had convert to 2nd when he joined the Dodgers. He was a brilliant baserunner. If his skills on the field were lacking, he'd be run off no matter what his character was.
Second, he had to be educated and strong in his personal skills. Jackie attended UCLA and was also an officer in the Army. Being educated was very important in being accepted. Any lack in any area would've been a huge detriment to his acceptance.
Third, he had to have the guts to take all the abuse and not give in and fight back. When Branch Rickey first asked this of him, he got mad and asked if Mr. Rickey was looking for a black man afraid to fight back. Nope - It takes more strength to just ignore it. Jackie had the guts. He badly wanted to fight the injustice, but he saw the wisdom in what Mr. Rickey was asking of him. He had to let his ability on the field do his talking for that first year.
Skill, intelligence, and courage made the complete package leading to the successful playing of the game.

For Jackie, I'd say a lot of skills and tolerance. He had to be a really good baseball player for him to be able to play in the mlb when people didn't want colored players on the teams. And he had to have a lot of tolerance to take all of the racial comments and threats being directed towards him.

As the first Black player, he had to be able to restrain himself from the negative, things like insults from the other players as well as from hecklers in the crowd, and take out slides that were a little too late, on one hand, and the attention and admiration of the entire Black community that had pinned so much of its post-War aspirations on him and his performance on the other hand. He did not disappoint and his success was the direct catalyst for the Indians to quickly sign Larry Doby as the AL's first black player. Possibly, although impossible to tell, his success as a major league ballplayer got Black people to coalescence around the civil rights movement. The thinking would have been if a Black man could play second base for the Dodgers, a Black man could be in any one of the hundreds of professions, schools and neighborhoods that were effectively closed to Black people at that time.

He needed courage more than anything else. And the ability to block out the fact that he was making history and just play the gane (which he did as well as the best of them). I think he must have been a good man to know.

He had to remain calm and be patient and the enormous amount of pressure he had to endure regarding his race and had to do it with dignity and class and he certainly was very patient and able to overcome the racial barriers of the day which opened the doors for other black ballplayers to help baseball really become Americas pastime.
