I always clipped mine to about 6 inches tall, covered them with leaves and put a styrofoam container over them for winter...but then we go below freezing and get plenty of snow. In spring I cut them back to about 1-2 inches and keep them that height until 4th of July. From that point forward I no longer clip them and they are beautiful each fall.

Trim them off about 3 or 4 inchest from the ground, if you have a fairly cold winter, just let the cut stems lie where you cut them, will help protect the plants.

Hi, I've cut mine down that far before, and it didn't hurt them. Now I would say, if you live where there's snow, cut them close to the ground. If you live where there isn't snow cut them down to just a couple of inches to the ground.(Kinda like you do to rose's).Give them some quick-start to last Thur the winter, and help keep them from shock due to the heavy pruning.

You can do nothing . Leave the tops till spring. When the new growth starts in spring then cut off the old dead pieces . Leaveing the dead stems thru winter helps insulate them.

I just trim off the dead blooms about an inch down the stem & call it good.....
This year I didn't have to worry about it, I had a moose that decided he like the flowers & trimmed ALL of mine for me......
