Depends: 1942 - Japan. 1945 - U.S.

In 1942 the Japanese attacked Wake Island thinking that it would be an easy conquest. The Marines stationed there put up a dogged defence that cost the Japanese more time and men than they had predicted. Wake Island was basically valuable only as a staging area for further forays into the Pacific, for both the U.S. and Japan (the Pan Am Clipper used Wake as a fueling station)

Wake Island was right after Pearl Harbor in 1941 so the Japanese took it but only after a handful of US Marines held out for as long as they could which was untill Dec 24 1941
