every time I type in what i wont the connection name (SSID) it says that the charecters i have used are invalid but I'm only using letters.

It may be that the router is set for Caps only, though I would highly doubt this to be the case. There is a free Wireless Network Scanning utility I use, that will tell of all local access points. I can't remember the name off the top of my head, but there are many free one's available on the Net. Of course you'd have to hard wire the notebook to download one. These will give you the correct SSID for your setup. You may also want to sign into your router while hard wired, and go to the setup portion and just check what the SSID is set to there. Lastly, check that the network connection is set to automatically obtain the IP address and the NetBui. At the command prompt type in the following:
ipconfig /release (note the space) then type in:
ipconfig /renew (note the space)
This should obtain an address for you even if the SSID is not set up. Hope this helps
