My Shih Tzu is a part of the family. Why leave him behind if I don't have to? You can find motels that accept pets, I have. Pets are not allowed in restaurants. So, either do take out, delivery or a picnic in the park. Otherwise the pet will have to stay behind in the motel room. Boat rides....not sure.

We take our pets with us because we can. Many finer Hotels like Four Season and The Ritz Carlton take pets and they have pampering services for them. Putting a dog in a kennel is sometimes cruel and very hard on the pet. Many times they ome home with illness as to be cages (similar to a human being in jail) is very hard for a house pet. My dog has traveled with me for over 12 years in his Louis Vuitton dog carrier. It cost a vet bill for the health certificate which runs about 120-160, then 80 each way on the airlines. I personally try to upgrade to First Class with my American Airlines Gold card privileges which again cost money so my dog is more comfortable as the Airlines requires a pet carrier be put under the seat. Of course my dog stays in the hotel when I am out working, yachting ,shopping, or dining in a fine restaurant. Of course their is nothing more wonderful then being in a friendly town like LaJolla, CA or Fort Lauderdale, FL that welcomes dogs at their outdoor dining establishments and inside boutiques. Americans as opposed to Europeans are so uptight about animals. In France it is very common to see a dog in a restaurant.

Usually because:
1)There's nobody with whom to leave the pet
2)They cant bear to be parted with a dear pet, even for a few days.
There are pet-lover organizations that help such people plan pet friendly vacations.

We had a border collie and we left her at the animal clinic for the week end. She got kennel cough and we like to have never gotten her over it. That is why we're leery of leaving our pets anywhere.
