Since the chargers were called for illegal forward pass ( and regained the ball after what should have been a fumble) shouldn't they have also been penalized with loss of down ?? Since it was 4th already the Raiders should have received the ball ?? Am I right ?

Six string - That's what I thought also, until I checked the NFL rulebook and it clearly states 5 yd penalty & loss of down.

The illegal forward pass rule (in this situation) was initiated in the league to keep players from intentionally fumbling the ball forward to a teammate ie: the "holy roller" play. Since the fumble was initiated by Jackson and the ball moved forward, it is automatically ruled an illegal forward pass and the play stops as soon as the ball hits the ground. That penalty does not carry a loss of down, the refs made the right call. Still a rookie move by Jackson, but the call was correct.

In regards to a QB passing from beyond the line of scrimmage the "illegal forward pass" penalty would come with a loss of down. But the "illegal forward pass" on a forward fumble is a lesser penalty and thus only carries the 5 yd penalty. They are two completely different penalties that happen to have the same name. (They should clear that up though, it's confusing.)

No. According to the officials on the field and upstairs at the game, it was concidered an illegal forward pass, not an illegal forward pass from beyond the line of scrimmage which would have been 5 yards and loss of down. Be sure you look at both rules....that play was only the loss of 5 yard variety.

They should have been penalized with loss of down, But it became obvious early in the game that the Raiders would not win. Not if the officials had anything to say about it.

yes you're right. the refs haven't been very fair today but the teams they were unfair to still came out on top anyway.. like the pats and bears game.. they made so many bad calls but the pats still won!
