thats like comparing a lexus to a honda. They're on different levels.

a sempron is a buggy athlon with disabled cache's... A celeron is a buggy pentium4 with the disabled cache. So you really cant compare a sempron to a pentium4.
In other words:
Celeron=Sempron
Pentium4=Athlon

going with dual core would be a better investment.. it'd last longer. BUT not everything utilizes dual cores. At least get a AMD Athlon64 3200+.. Intel is not worth buying unless you buy the Core2. those are just flat out amazing.

If i remember correct, AMD is coming out with new processors and that'd drop the prices of desktops with their current processor lineup.. so i'd hold off for a little bit. it'd save you some money.

i have a AMD Athlon X2 3800+, Does the job and i'm really happy with it. My only tip would be to read up on these things, knowing about what goes on in the computer hardware world makes a big difference on how much money stays in your pocket.

It depends on what you'd be using it for. And it's entirely dependent on that. Pentiums are Intel's high-end processor chip, whereas Sempron are AMD's lower-end "home use" processor.

Personally, I'd take the Sempron 3400+ over the Pentium 2.4, but that is a personal preference and may not apply to your situation. Try browsing Wikipedia's articles on Sempron and Pentium processors for more information.
