I believe it is now classified as a contact sport.
"basketball has been classified as both a contact sport (Huang et al., 1999) and a no contact sport (Zillmann et al, 1974). Although the degree of contact in basketball is somewhat less than in football or rugby because players cannot deliberately hit to bring each other down, physical clashes are frequent, and athletes must be strong enough to deal with it."

When Dr. Naismith invented the game it was a 'no contact' sport, meaning the players were never to come in contact with one another. It has evolved into a 'semi-contact' sport, meaning there is some contact that is allowed and some that is not.

well, basketball is not technically a "contact" sport because you are not supposed to hurt the other players, and if you do, it is a foul. In contact sports like football or hockey, tackling is part of the game.

Who knows? I've been playing basketball for almost 13 years at the forward/center position, and my father and I have always had a favorite quote:
"Basketball (when played correctly) is a contact sport....Forward/Center (when played correctly) is a violent sport."

Because unlike hockey they usually have all their teeth. Same as with boxing. All sports are physical arent they? Some more than others but even as physical as that is, it is not the prime directive to make contact rather than avoid it to get off a clean shot.

i don't know but i think it is a very contact sport. Just last week i got cut in the head with braces. And u can't tell me that it isn't contact. I hate when people say it isn't a contact sport.

First of all Rondo went for the ball and missed, if you would of actually watched the replay you could tell that. even though i didn't agree with that comment i completely agree with the diva comments and about being treated differently. but a lot of theses rules are here to protect the players, because if you go down you are falling onto a hard wooden floor, which is unlike soccer where you fall down in grass and might accidentally stain your shorts.

i think its definitely a contact sport... i think its classified as a non-contact sport because you're not supposed to. and i guess compared to other sports, its not a lot, but theres definitely a lot of contact

the intent in basketball is not the same as football and rugby where contact is required; whereas in basketball its simply unavoidable, but not in the blueprint. HOWEVER, like I eluded to - its unavoidable. you have to play defense, you have to be active and aggressive on offense. so, I think basketball DOES qualify as a contact sport because contact is unavoidable, although it was not created w/ in the same manner as football or rugby. its more/less about the varying degrees of contact.
