how did u know that it will end up ur friendship? nobody knows what will happen tomorrow and no one knows how he really feel towards you.
why dont u take the risk.. before its too late!
i'd been in the same situation before, and he did not told me how he feel towards me.. it is only now that he admit he likes me (after 13yrs) and its too late coz we are both committed (have families)
there are times that a person is not sure on how he/ she feel towards a certain bestfriend, we sometime never notice the gesture because we are so afraid of many things and even afraid to admit the truth.
you said that he likes someone totally opposite of you?.. my bestfriend is same w/ urs.. he had a couple of relationships w/ our common friends way back and opposite of me also.. simply because he's trying his best to keep his mind away from how i am.. thinking that finding someone absolutely diff from me will change how he feel towards me..
but the old feeling is still hunting us.. because we could have a good relationship before other than being a friend.. too late to admit the truth!

If you want to keep the friendship and you know telling him how you feel will end the relationship you're in a tough spot.
How bout waiting for the right moment, during a fun and lighthearted conversation and say to him that every once in a while, in a certain type of light, you think you might be able to like him more than just a friend, then kindof laugh (in a nice way) and see how he acts.
That's a pretty non-committal and light way to approach it and it can go forward or backward pretty easily from there. Have your next step worked out for different scenarios you can envision, but try to keep it natural. Best of luck!
btw, I love Tank Girl too. I just watched it for the first time the other day and laughed my head off. I can't wait for my movie channels to show it again!

When you care about someone, someone who is special and considerate of other people's feeling, you should tell them. And after you tell them that you love them, they should feel complimented, feeling good, and special because they have someone who loves them.
If you think for one minute that this will end your friendship then your friendship was a weak one in the first place. He should feel closer to you if he understands that it takes courage for you to open up to him. And if he doesn't understand, wish him luck and let him have his time with his lady of choice.
You.. you... you got to go where there is a rainbow waiting for you, and it might not be in his eyes. Still, you got to keep stepping and find your rainbow. It will hurts. Yes, it will, but the reward is worth it.
Now, first thing first. Take him out to dinner and tell him.
Good luck!

My experience is kind of on the opposite side of the spectrum. Recently, like 21 hours ago recently, my best friend, who happens to be a girl, tried to kiss me and I said no. At the moment I can't tell if I'll regret that or not, but I am glad she made an effort because its not that I didn't want to kiss her back, its that I was scared and I don't want things to change in our relationship. My advice to you is to give him some bait and see if he bites.

take the chance. not all the times people end up with their friendships for speaking up.
after telling him, if his answer is not the one you were looking for, say, "welll....... this is odd isnt it ^o^ " and smile big. then try to get things back to normal.
