If you mean on regular POTS (plain old telephone system), you must have a V.92 modem, AND using an ISP that supports V.92 interrupt, AND have call waiting. As for HOW you answer, that would depend on the modem.

Most of us have DSL or cable modems and therefore don't need to worry about that problem.

There are some modems that will work with software to let you know when you've missed a call, but I haven't installed a modem in years.

If you have dsl your land line will just ring, if you don't have this option you need to further investigate what services are available to you with the plan you currently have! Peace!
