I have this fascination with Malaysia. The company my dad worked for had an office in Kuala Lumpur - I made him promise to take me if he ever had to go on business. He just recently retired, and we never got to go - damnit!
But I have gathering lots of information about Malaysia. From what I have learned about the culture, architecture, food, wildlife and geography, it is pretty exotic.
I will go someday.

GOOD question. After reading this question, I wanted to answer it. There is only one country in the world that I have been to in my life time and I would think this would be the most exotic place in the world. That would be The Philippines. After seeing the white sandy beaches, clear, warm blue water and dense palm trees (which are many in the P.I.) makes it what I consider one of the most exotic places in the world.

i think it depends on how you describe exotic, the place, the people or their culture?
i have few choices, one of them will be tahiti for their lush scenery, beautiful people and their culture, then maldives for its perfect blue lagoon and the sri lankan culture...im already familiar with hawaii and philippines..as their beauty is practically similar since they are all island...
second will be the amazon river for its wondrous sight together with the rain forest and its river that cover and run practically to most of south american countries..
next will be the cape town-south african for their wildlife safari, think about those famous animals that is able to run around free on their own inhabitant..
i also love new zealand, switzerland for their mountains and alps..but i've seen a place called panukkale in turkey, that is awesome, then how about the palm island in dubai (palm jumeirah) in united arab emirates..and among other places that someday i wish i can visit..

the why part of your question i am not going to even try to answer,the most exotic to me is the island bora bora in the french polynesian country of tahati in the south pacific

I have to totally agree with "shoe s" above. That is ONE place I definitely want to go to in my lifetime. Spend the money and rent one of those over the water burs (hut). Imagine having breakfast in one of those, throwing your clothes off, stepping off your front deck and right into that beautiful crystal clear water!!! Now THAT'S living!!
