If you are looking for free fiction online, I can not reccommend highly enough the stories by Mike MacLean--especially "Little Sins" at http://www.thrillingdetective.com/fiction/05_12_03.html , even if the hard boiled detective genre is not your schtick.

Ray Bradbury's _The Martian Chronicles_ is neat, the telling of humans landing on Mars from the Martian's perspective. In one of the chapters, the captain from the earth ship gets sent to a sanitarium because everyone thinks he's crazy.

If you like Americana literature, I can recommend anythign by Will Cather, and her book O Pioneers can be found online at http://www.pagebypagebooks.com/Willa_Cather/O_Pioneers/Part_I_The_Wild_Land_ChapterI_p1.html

An excellent Russian novel is _One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch_. You can purchase it at amazon at http://www.amazon.com/Life-Denisovitch-Signet-Classics-Paperback/dp/0451527097/sr=8-2/qid=1164592192/ref=pd_bbs_2/102-0260685-8911333?ie=UTF8&s=books

And for romance, my wife likes the author Nora Roberts.

It's difficult to really tell you about good fiction without knowing your tastes, but I hope this gives you a beginning.

Stephen King has several collections of short stories, as do Mark Twain and Edgar Allan Poe.

I like some of Stephen King's short stories. They've usually suspenseful and enjoyable. Try Nightmares and Dreamscapes, and Everythings Eventual.

Depends on what kind of stories you like. Try the web site, ABCTales.com - it's a site where writers share their stories and readers provide feedback. With so many different types of writers adding stories, you should be able to find something like you enjoy.

I like Sandra Cisneros for her efficient use of language and her use of her own cultural background to bring life to her stories. I also like Margaret Atwood who writes short stories as impressive as her lengthy novels.
