Absolutely not. The Irish have produced some of the most literal geniuses and musical geniuses of all time. One of each category that come to mind are James Joyce and Shane MacGowan. There are many more. The Irish seem to have a greater amount of creative people than most cultures. I hope that answers your question.

No... not that there's anything wrong with drinking or starting a fight ;) The stereotypes certainly prevail, a lot of American-Irish are proud of some of the stereotypes (I won't lie... I've bragged my fair share about drinking and sticking it to the man), but most of us realize that we have our own unique subculture going on. I think it's good to have an ethnic subculture to identify with in this country, particularly when many people do not feel that 'American' identifies them correctly for various reasons. A lot of 'patriotic' people here say that one can be just American and that's it, not American-Irish or American-whatever, and that gets on my nerves a lot.

I've heard people romanticize everything from the great hunger to the CIRA, and after a while you just learn to laugh or disregard instead of getting into an argument over it.

That said, a lot of Americans are idiots. Almost half of us voted for Bush once, and slightly more than half voted for him a second time around. Assume that people like that will most likely harbor some sort of stereotype from time to time.

My paranoia is always that non-American people will think Americans are all like Bush... or that we all speak with that sort of accent just because our recent presidents have been from the south.

I bunked with an Irish guy [real Irish], in the Army and I never met a better quality person. Seems he was always trying to keep me strait. Not that I needed help. Ive only known 2 Irish people that Im sure are 100% Irish, the ohter Is a girl Im In love with, but from my experiance, they seem to be quit serious natured, hard working, quit emotional, very admirable people. By the way, her name is Janna. If you see her tell I still love her. Always.

No...I think a lot of Americans think of Irish people as tap dancers with red hair wearing green clothes and four leaf clovers. (*not me) Drinking is kind of part of Irish culture so maybe that's where people are getting that from but people drink in America all the time too...

I'm Australian and I don't think we have that image of you guys. We think you're charming, fun loving, happy go lucky people (maybe cos lots of us have an Irish ancestry!). I've known Irish backpackers and immigrants and the Irish Olympic Team and the vast majority I have met have been nothing like drunken, fight-starting slobs.

Hahaha! I'm kidding!
