She was in a motorcycle accident 5 months ago and is paralyzed from the waist down. She recently has "regained muscle control" of her stomach, (she can voluntarily contract her own stomach muscles) and she said shes regained some feeling in her lower back. This past week she has had a burning sensation in her lower back and bottom. Are these good signs? We're all rootin' for her to walk and surf again. What % of a chance do you think she has of walking again?

its not a matter of percentage,as -if she's going to walk again,
theres alot of different things to ask before asking that,
sort of like:

is she permanently paralized?
if so,,,then she probably won't never become unparalized unless she's blessed by god & through faith she can walk again,

also,
if the doctors can tell or if she knows that its not permanently paralization then give it some good ol' time & maybe she will retreive her normal well-being.
Just as she has been with the other parts of her body.

If she hasn't already then she should take this as a blessing &/or a lesson for what she needs to do next-(not in anyway offending or talking down-on)-,if she accepts that,I believe there would be a better/greater chance of her becoming well-again.
It would/just as it has, make her think different about life & see things in a whole new era.

mainly the come-back question would be is it permanent?
(I would think the doctors would know this)

but to answer your question from the story you've told me.
I'd say a 85%

Thats because I have great faith in alot of things
I'll pray for that person & hope the best for all of you.

If you can/remember,please let me know the outcome in the end.

-Randy

I don't think this something any of us can accuratly decide without medical records and medical training. However, if she killed the nerves in her lower back she will never regain the ability to walk, much less surf...however, if they have been pinched but have not yet "died" then with medical help and PT/OT work she could regain walking sensation.
The thing to keep in mind is that spinal nerves cannot regenerate so once destroyed that's that. However, if the pathways to the brain are still operatable then over time the temporary paralysis could become less. So I guess to put a random % on it...if there are still nerves, she may have a 50-75% chance of walking, less so of surfing as that requires finer motor control. If the communication lines between the brain and the muscles have been severed than the percentage is 0% medically.
If you and your friends are concerned I would suggest consulting with her, her parents and her physician to see what they say.

Would like to know how much the damage in the spinal cord is. If there is complete transection of the cord, I doubt it if she would walk again since it's been 5 months since the injury. Sorry to sound pessimistic-just stating a fact. Normally, the waiting period for function to come back after spinal injury is three months. There was hope in spinal cord regeneration with the use of stem cells but since that guy from Korea admitted he faked his results, the research is now in limbo. But as they say, there is nothing definitely sure about Medicine-maybe a miracle will occur and your friend will walk again. Just help her with your prayers.

Well the feeling means she getting her feeling back. This is good the hcances she will walk and surf? I'd say....73%. If shes getting feeling back there's obviously somethin happenin. I'd say in maybe a couple months she'd be able to do stuff again

Look Beth there are many exercises in which your friend can overcome being paralyzied but I also believe that in this case its not that serious. Do leg exercises move it up and down with help of another also consult a doctor but hopefully she has a 70% of recovery. I will pray for her

The University of Helsinki has made an amazing breakthrough in curing paralysis.

In the meantime, to get a head start, your friend can try this exoskeleton that can help her to walk again. It is called ReWalk. www.rewalk.com
