OK now from someone who's been in the biz for 20 years.
It totally depends on where it is you are ordering from.
If it is a place that has seated tables that the server will depend on for tips..... you should always tip.
Reason being, that the person who took the time to make sure your order was together, and complete was probably one of those servers with customers in the dining room.
The host staff can't do it because they usually are not familiar enough with the menu to get it all right.
Is a couple of extra bucks really gonna kill you??
You did not shop for, prepare or worry much at all about this meal, right??
TIP.

If your at a restaurant that a member of the waitstaff takes your order yes always tip. You shouldn't tip a large amount just a couple bucks. Always check your order before you leave if somethings wrong and you left a tip they are going to fix the problem quickly and without a problem. Remember most waitstaff only make between $3 & $4 and hour.

Yes. Anyone that works in a position like that makes a lower wage in hopes that they will be tipped out. They still have to pay taxes on the food sold. Meaning that the government looks at it as a tipped position and they must claim tips. If you go to Applebee's or somewhere that does car service, they are doing you a service, they are bringing it to your car. You can at least leave them 10-15%. I personally, always leave 20%+. But, I'm in the service industry and it would be bad karma if I didn't.

I never had before. Yet, I did for the first time last week. We were ordering Chinese food and I wanted something that wasn't technically on the menu. The guy went into the back to explain what I wanted (basically something vegetarian). So I put a dollar in their tip jar.
So I guess my answer would be only if they go out of their way to help you.

Yes! The people who ring in food for you have to pay taxes for everything you've ordered from them. Although it's not an exorbitant amount of money, they're still technically paying a portion of your meal.
It's no longer a customary 10% gratuity when dining out. People should tip at least 15%.

I don't tip To-Go because that's why I order To-Go. I order to-go to save money on appetizers, drinks and tip. You can afford to eat out more often if you do it that way. I don't consider myself cheap, either. I have a nice house and the things I need. But why squander your money when there is a more economical approach to the same thing? For a nice evening, order to-go entrees and bring it home to eat over candlelight. Add your own salad from a bag and drink water! Good Luck!

Yes you should tip when picking up takeout. Chances are a server making $2.63 an hour took the order over the phone, rang it in the computer, gathered all your sides and then bagged everything for you. While there is no set %, a dollar or two makes it worth their time

If it is a fine dining establishment that has table service, yes you tip 10 percent.
If you can afford to order off the menu at a good place that has sit down service then you should be able to leave a tip. And yes it is cheap not to tip for carryout at a fine dining establishment.

If you go to a casual dining restaurant you should tip for takeout. Take out is twice as much work as dining in. Plus, people who do take out are less patient, less friendly and certainly more demanding! Do the folks a favor and tip something. Even if you are simply nice and easy to serve! That my friends is a "tip." If someone serves you, pay them!

No, not unless they walked the food out to the curb like Applebees. Then a buck or two depending on the size of the order and the weather.
