I'm using a friends system & I just got a message from Microsoft saying that support will end for Windows 98 & XP on July 11, 2007. I don't know much about computers. What does it mean to have NO SUPPORT? Can an old HP be up-graded, or do they need a complete new unit? HELP PLEASE.

MICROSOFT contacted me after I logged onto a YHOO site to get info to answer a question on who owns yahoo. It tried to lock me out, but I was able to get back it. It said they were starting to discontinue service NOW, before the cut off date!

I guess that means I'll be going back to the Library for awhile if this system DOES go down. It would have been nice if the service providers would have told their customers about this little "glitch".

Actually support for Windows 98 98se, and ME ended on July 11, 2006. Support for XP, and XP service pack 1 ended October 10, 2006.
This does not mean you cannot download the update from the Microsoft, it only means that Microsoft will no longer offer help. Even the "Pay per incident" help. Microsoft will also stop posting patches for them.

Windows 98 has been on extended support for some time, and the 2007 date doesn't surprise me.

The XP date is wrong -- note the 2008 planned release of SP3. Microsoft won't sell XP beyond that 2007 date, and won't support development on that platform, but they most assuredly will support it with service patches through 2008.

It means we are on our own. I've never liked XP, but I'll just have to trash the Crapaq (sorry, Compaq) that I bought new and never worked correctly, anyway. We'll have to get a newer model when ours bite the dust.
