well, one of my friends mom's told me that her son {my friend} had a phobia about death. His father died when he was young and he would get scared before she took him to school because he was scared that she was gonna die too.. Is this common?

This is not uncommon, especially when the death occurred while he was young. His sense of security and safety were suddenly taken away. He reasoned that the same could happen to his mom and then, in his young world, he would have no one. He became very, very anxious. He will hopefully grow out of this fear. Maturity will eventually win out when he sees, yes, anyone can die, and in time, everyone does. Death is a normal process of life.

Most people are afraid of dying. As one gets older the fear subsides somewhat. It is not common though, for a teen-ager for example to be pre-occupied with death to the point that he thinks about it a lot.

i think the reason "the fear subsides with age" is that people put up amental block so they don't think about it. at least, my rabbi said that. and no, im not super-religious, i just heard that.
