I'm also looking for the cheapest (new) way to send money. So far https://transferwise.com/u/fc49f4/ serves the purpose with free transfer service. Really worth trying once for transfers upto $4500 as saves money. I complain about money transfers as I am expatriate. Then a friend referred to a simple place to go for money transfers - transferwise and also comparison site like moneytis.com and compare remit. But best feature is minute by minute updated exchange rate which can be compared online and decided upon. For USA-to-India: Xoom (company) and Western Union are leaders in the online segment by far but not so good on pocket. Among "startups", TransferWise and Remitly started supporting this corridor few months ago, but remitly has no exciting offer. Remittance setups into India are regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Hope to see more exciting offers.

There are many ways to send money from U.K to INDIA. You can use Money2INDIA option in www.ICICI.com and then click NRI banking or click this
http://www.icicibank.com/Pfsuser/icicibank/ibank-nri/nrinewversion/home_nri.htm
It is free and it takes 3 to 4 days to send money to an INDIAN Account. Registration is easy. You don’t have to have an account with ICICI bank. Neither your recipient.
I have an account with HDFC bank. They are very good as well.
It works very easy and you don't have to have an account with HDFC. I found personally HDFC is very good and more over their web interface is clutter free and easy to understand.
http://www.hdfcbank.com/nri/default.htm
And click on Quick Remit option.
If you want to send very quickly then www.westernunion.co.uk but their charges are high.
The fastest of all is post office but charges are very very high. But goes with in 30 minutes and you can send it to remote places also.
Best of luck.

Money order? You'd have to mail in smaller increments, though.
