Perhaps because you allow it. I would personally be appalled and no, my kids aren't perfect but I have raised them to know better.

It's just a phase.
Let them know that it is disrespectful and the next time they refer to guests as dude they will have to stay in their room during the whole event. Make sure you follow through though.

They're kids, thats what they do. If they have children who are about the same age, i doubt they'll care all that much. Have you said something to your kids? If you give them some incentive ($) they might stop. Or if you dislike the idea of giving them money, make a bet that they cant go a whole day without saying "dude"

Probably b/c they got a reaction out of it. Most things kids do they do for attention. Did people laugh the first few times the did it? If you want them to stop, you'll have to stop reacting to it, if that doesn't work, you will have to warn them about it (tell them before hand if they call people that they will be sent to their rooms for a certain amount of time, or whatever action you want to take), if they don't like the reaction they get from it, they will usually stop...good luck!

Dude! It's because it bothers you, gets your attention, is a statement that they are their own person and separate from you.

I heard once that my generation (I'm 52) immersed ourselves in every type of attention-getting action except tatoos and piercings. So what are my sons into? Tatoos and piercings. I mentioned that to my oldest and son and he said he agrees that is probably why his generation is so much into tatoos and piercings.

Pick your battles. I agree that it may not be good for YOUR reputation to have kids that greet adults familiarly as "dude," but if you and your kids are still having fun together the rest will work itself out.

Kids will be kids. But, if they are over 8 years old, sit them down and tell them that it is inappropriate. If they are under 8 years old, totally and completely ignore it. They won't do it if they don't get a reaction from you or your guests.

You should teach them the right way to address people, not as Dude...as Mr. and Mrs. or other proper headings for elders. Good luck!

Your child "insists?" Um, you guys are the parents. Why don't you "insist" on making them address your friend properly or "insist" on taking away some of their privledges or allowance.

Well, explain to the children that you don't like adressing your guests in this manner. Suggest sir or m'am.

Your the parent, if you don't like it, then you need to stop it. The sooner the better.

Because they want their parents to appear cool and hip...which is just silly!
My little cousins insist that I wear makeup and high heels to pick them up from school.
