bill russell was a winner in grade school, high school, college and the nba....maybe its because he belongs to the era long time past but these people who think of others as the greatest never bother to look up russell's winning accomplishments.... and to those of you who chose chamberlain, you might want to check how russell dominated their encounters to wilt's frustration and you have the gall to choose wilt over rusell...and remember michael jordan did not win his first title until he was six years in the league and bird, magic and kareem were fading or away from the battles....11 rings in 13 nba campaigns says it all and he even played in 12 finals....no player ever has ever achieved 12 finals in 13 seasons and to say no one will ever again is a safe bet....being great should never be about personal records, flashy plays, or scoring many points...it should be about winning and there is no bigger winner than the great Bill Russell

Can you offer any specifics on WHY he was the best ever? What makes you think that? He MIGHT be in the top ten, but definitly NOT the best ever.
Yes, he scored alot of points, but he also took a hell of a lot more shots than anyone too. Both he and Wilt Chamberlain are tied for first on the all-time scoring leaders list at 30 ppg. But, Jordan took over 1,000 more shots than Wilt. Plus, Wilt averaged over 22 rpg to MJ's 6rpg. In addition, steals and blocked shot stats were not kept back then, otherwise Wilt would have led in those categories as well.
And as far as winning, Jordan didn't win his first ring until his 7th year, in the talent diluted '90's, when Bird and Magic were about to retire. As a matter of fact, Jordan's Bulls didn't break the .500 mark until his 4th year.
In comparison. Larry Bird took a Celtic team that won only 29 games the year before his arrival and turned them into 61 game winners. And his Celtics won 60+ games in 6 of his first 7 seasons. All this while having to compete against a tough 76er team, and a Magic/Kareem led Laker team.
Michael Jordan was a great player for his time, but no way was he better than Bird, Magic, Wilt, Russell, Kareem, or Oscar.
Anyone who thinks otherwise watches too much ESPN!

Well, I personally believe that in order to say some one is the best ever they must have seen all of the others. That's why I always say "Jordan is the best NBA player I've ever SEEN". My daddy says it's Chamberlain or Oscar Robertson and I can't argue with him because I've never seen them play. Maybe they were, I have no idea.
Secondly, I don't belive that winning a lot of championships have any weight on an individual's talents. Unfortunately, some great players get stuck on sorry teams. They can't really do much about that.

I've gotta get the top answer on this one... look below and view the info that I have provided. I agree, Jordan is the greatest of all time.
I totally agree with you. He is the greatest of all time. Both from a statistical standpoint, and from a team standpoint, who has accomplished what he has? Also, he's arguably the greatest defender of all time as well. He avg'd over 1.5 blocks per game one season, and led the league in steals 4 times, and was in the top 5 in that category nearly every yr in his prime. This wasn't a 6'0-6'2 Point guard. He was 6'6 and averaging that many steals.
Plus, unlike Kobe and the other guys compared to him, he was in the top 15 in the NBA in FG%, averaging over 30 points a game one season! And if you don't count the Wizards' seasons, his lifetime FG% was .501. Even if you do count those seasons, his lifetime FG% was .497. Kobe has yet to shoot over 47% for an entire season one single time! This is a GUARD we are talking about here, not a power forward.
Also, he had a 2 to 1 Assist-to-Turnover ratio 7 times in his career. Kobe has yet to do that ONCE! LeBron has already accomplished that twice, and on his way to doing it again this yr as well. Jordan is the greatest of all time - end of conversation.

It depends how old they are. People under 20 prolly never saw MJ played at his prime, so they say LBJ is the best basketball player ever, even though he's only played 3 seasons. (he still could get injured and lose his athletism, like penny hardaway, grant hill, etc)

yeah he really was, you look back at the carrer he had and no one came even close to being as good as he was. And even when he wasn't having a good game he would figure out a way to make something happen and score points.

honestly he's by far the best, but people look at young talent that could be as great but to be honest its like Barry Sanders and Emmit Smith argument you know who's the best of all time many would say Barry if he'd played as long but I say Smith cause he is the all time leading rusher. So people need to look at accomplishments not what could do.
