Thrush is a fungus that horses get from standing in mud too long or from any moisture. Picking out the horses hooves daily will help prevention of this. It has a really strong smell (it doesn't smell like horse poop so do not get this confused when you are picking the hooves out) and is black-some horses hooves are naturally black so mainly look for a strong out of the ordinary smell. This can make the horse go lame so be sure to treat right away. We use Thrush Buster or coppertox-both should be found at your local tack shop (ask someone who works there). Bleach can be used for a severe case. Put the medication in the two cracks along each side of the frog and in that little hole at the top middle part of the frog. One application should do it. If you still smell/see it a day or two later, add another application.

I agree with everything but the bleach- bleach will work, but will kill a bunch of the good stuff and dry out the hoof as well. I asked about thrush treatment a couple weeks ago, and someone suggested Hydrogen Peroxide. I have applied it 3 times a week and I think her thrush is clearing up. I won't know for sure until the next trimming, but it looks better. (BTW- you don't have to be in a completely gunky pasture to get thrush) My horse gets her feet picked out at least 5 times a week and is in a clean scraped stall every night and a grass pasture in the day- still has constant thrush.)
One other product I have heard a lot of good reviews for: Thrushbuster. There are pros and cons to it, but I have not heard a complaint from anyone who has tried it, other than it tends to stain everything.

Thrush occurs when your horse as been exposed to mud of any type of moisture for too long. Their hooves will smell horrible when cleaned, they will sometimes be very flaky, or discolored. The horse will usually show some signs of lameness. Simply treatment though, get them in a drier lot, and spray bleach onto the underside of the hoof a couple times a day.

It is a infection in the hoof cause by too much mostiore. Most horses get thrush because their hoofs dont get picked oou enough. Most horses are ok with thrush if its not severe (not that you shouldnt treat it) but if it becomes severe it will cause lameness. The hoof normally smells horrible and is almost squishy to the touch. Also when you pick your horses hoofs you might see white gunk.

It's a disease of the hoof that causes the frog to decay. It makes the hoof mushy and stinky.
