Well, I think it may have to do with the fact, that at least in humans (I don't know about w the animals), it's the "Y" chromosone in the sperm, that determines the sex of a baby. A clone, I believe, uses the egg, without the sperm, and so the offspring will be female.

It also happens that some crossings between animals (like a horse and a donkey) will be a sterile critter (the mule). I believe it's for a similar reason.

First, reproduction is possible through parthenogenesis when an egg with ALL the chromosomes is produced. Since the only source of the chromosomes is a female, the egg by definition has two X chromosomes making it female.

It is theoretically possible to produce a male through cloning, extracting the DNA from an egg and introduding the male's full complement of DNA.
