A&E is the accident and emergency department. This is the part of the hospital that treats sudden acute illness or accidents / injuries. You can just walk in and be seen or come in via ambulance. When you arrive you will be seen by a triage nurse who will assess how urgently you need to be seen by a doctor, you will then wait to be seen. The wait can be anything from a few minutes to several hours depending on urgency.
You will then have access to tests, x-rays, scans etc as neccesary. If you are deemed to be fit to go home after treatment (for instance youve broken your arm and had it put in plaster) you will then go home with an out patients appointment. If you are seriously ill or need to stay in for treatment you will be admitted to a ward. A&E is only for emergencies that can't wait to be seen by your GP xxx
