Renegotiating contract with recruitment agent?

Is it normal for a recruitment agent to take 40% of your salary? I found out how much I'm *actually* being paid and now I want to renegotiate the terms of my contract. All advice appreciated on how I can best go about this.

40% for how long? If you've already accepted the job, it's a little late to try to renegotiate. If you're talking 40% of your annual salary, that's extremely high. If you're talking 40% of a month's pay, you probably got out cheap.
