You will need either an RCA or S-video input on your computer to attach the VCR to it. Many laptops come with an S-video. You would need to purchase a "capture card" for you desktop (or laptop if it lacks an S-video input). They start around $75.00.

Once installed , you will need a video capture and editing software. Many DVD burner software package include a video capture and editing feature. If you purchase a capture card, the software will come with it. If you have to purchase one, low end editors start at about $75 and can go up to $500+ for professional ones.

Because you have to play a video tape to record it, it takes 2 hours to record two hours of video. Add the time to edit it and convert it to DVD format, and the burning time, and you should be prepared to spend about 4-5 hours for each hour of video you want to convert. (Longer if you have low memory, hard drive space or a slow processor).

Also, videos use huge amounts of hard drive space. You will probably need 40 gig of free hard drive space to convert 2-3 hours of tape. You will also need a lot of memory in your PC (1GB minimum) to be able to convert the video without it taking hours and hours.

Not trying to discourage, but just making sure that before you spend money to buy cards and software that you realize the amount of work that will be involved, so you do not spend the money and then not be able or willing to use the stuff.

You'll need a video capture card or some sort of Video-in capability in your PC to get the VCR output into the PC. THEN you run a capture program to capture all that onto the hard disk. THEN you edit out the portions you don't want, then run a conversion of that to DVD format, then burn that to DVD.

Or you can buy a DVD recorder, about $70 if you shop around carefully. Think about that.
