As far as the fish go, they don't care either way. Keeping real plants can be a very rewarding experience. However, if they keep dying, it can also be infuriating!
Do you have a fluorescent bulb? If so, then there's no reason that you shouldn't try your hand with a few plants. Most plants will quickly overgrow such a small tank, so try plants like banana plants, moss balls, or anubias.
Your fishes' waste should produce adequate fertilizer, but you can also pick up some trace elements (phosphorous etc) for plants (macros and micros), but only use a teensy bit.
Good luck!

Real plants are the way to go for many reasons. First off they do add O2 during the day, but the also consume O2 at night. Plants are loaded with bacteria to convert the fish waste to something less toxic to your fish. Plants also consume the ammonia that is produced by your fish.
In a low light tank, plant maintenance is almost non-existent. They will get all the nutrients they need from the fish and water changes.
The added benefit is that real plants look much better then fake.

having real plants is always better aesthetically and it helps out with the tank.... but there is some maintenance. You have to give to the right light, and nutrients. Aponogeton bulb is pretty easy to grow actually from what i remember.. but a 5 gallon tank is way too small for this plant.. it grows to 2 feet. It'll grow for awhile and then die on you. Next time get a java fern. it'll line in a 5 gallon tank with little maintenance.

Real plants are better because they help filter the aquarium and keep the tank clean and healthy. There will also be microrgansims that grow on the plants which your fish eat to stay healthy. The only reason why you wouldn't want a real plant is if you have fish that eat them

Young sliders rarely eat plants, but may uproot them in their activities. Older turtles DO eat plants- especially things like anacharis, duckweed, and water lettuce. They might also uproot the plants in daily activities. Overall, live plants are a good thing in a turtle tank. They offer food, help condition the water, add appeal, and just make a more 'liveable' habitat. Just make sure to anchor them well.

Depends on how you want aquarium to look. Some silk plants are quite realistic and rather cheap.
Real plants require some care and also require good lighting in your aquarium, and some feeding etc. Howver they do soak up some waste materials from your fish.
Plastic plants dont really look that great at all unless you want to spend on some of the expensive ones.

Real plants look better and help out with gas exchange but they can also carry snail eggs which can lead to a population out break in your tank(lots of snails). Fake plants on the other hand don't need fertiliser and also don't need to be trimmed or maintained at all. Its up to you.

i have found for my few yeas of aquarium keeping that fake plants are best. When you get real plants in the fish just chew them up, some are bad for your fish and you won't know it, and in my cousins three tanks she has real plants in all of them, but what has happend in her newest tank is that the fish at around the bottem and know they are all floating at the top. She has really regretted it in the long run.

Use the real plants they provide a more realistic environment for the fish. But a word of caution put the plants in the tank after it has settled for the required time of a new tank and then ;et them get acclamated to the tank for atleast two weeks before putting fish into the tank as the shock of fish and a new water will probably kill the plants.
