If you live in an area that stays above freezing, or has only a few nights when it dips below that, calendula (orange & yellow-orange) is a good choice. So is candytuft (white). Iceland poppies are very colorful, but get the variety "champagne bubbles" which has flowers on shorter stalks than the main variety - the wind can break them.

There are many more, but those are my favorites because they seem to be the most hardy and resistant to cold temperatures.

depends where you live, but pansies grow well in most climates in winter
