I know it isn't safe to use a hot tub while in the first trimester of pregnancy, but how unsafe is it? Should I be concerned if I've already been in a hot tub? I do know that the temps were over 101 but I was only in twice, once for about 45 min and another time for about 35 min. 1st pregnancy and no family history of miscarriages or defects...not a smoker or drinker either...thanks!

I love how everyone on this website is an Expert O.B.... My doctor told me it was fine to use a hot tub until about 4 months... just make sure to keep yourself hydrated, and limit yourself to about 15-20 at a time, taking breaks... at least that is what my doctor (who went to school and studied this sort of thing) told me. Check with your own doctor though...

Well, a lot of women don't know they are pregnant right away and do many things that you are advised not to do while pregnant. I know that a rise in your body temperature can cause defects/deformities/problems in the fetus but how likely is that to happen?? Not sure. Since you are fully aware that you are pregnant I would avoid hot tubs until you deliver just to be safe because you never do know. When I was pregnant with my first baby I got carbon monoxide poisoning and when I told the doctor they didn't seem too concerned. I was only nine weeks when that happened to. Well, my son is one active, happy and healthy four year old today. So who really knows what the chances are of your baby having problems. Just be safe and aware.

No you should never get into a hot tub when your pregnant have you ever heard the term a bun in the oven, b/c I'm sure that's what the baby felt when you were in the hot tub - like he/she was in an oven.. You have to realize that your body heats up when your in there and your baby may not like it.. 45 min's that's a long time if you ask me, my opinion - don't do it again, and if you really want to go in again ask your Dr/midwife so he/she can tell you not to.

If you've already been in a hot tub, and everything is still okay, I wouldn't worry too much, but ask your doctor...and stay out of the hot tub until you have your baby...You don't want to raise your temp too high, and that is exactly what will happen in a hot tub!! Best of luck!

well....dont do it again...if you have been to the doc since you got in the hot tub then I am sure you are fine...and its not just the first trimester..its during THE WHOLE PREGNANCY...you cant be in any temp. that could raise your blood temp. more than 2 degrees...causes miscarriage....as far as the am I ok right now thing....if you havent been to the doc..go....if you have I wouldnt worry..but dont get in again....you didnt say how far along you are...so if you are under 9 weeks..I would say your ok...but really use your dome....dont get in the hot tub until after the baby is born...

See your doctor, but I think you will be fine. Everything I have read says not to stay over 10-15 min. in a hot tub over 101 degrees ,because then it starts to raise your body temp to a dangerous level. Good luck.

You've got to stay out of the hot tub- even be careful of bath water at too high of a temperature. You can literally boil your baby! Miscarriage is not the only risk. The hot water can cause brain damage as well.

The reason it's bad is because it can cause your core body temp to raise and that affects the baby. I would NOT do it again, it's for the entire duration of the pregnancy. It can cause miscarriage early and preterm labor later in pregnancy.
