I've heard stories of people who get a kind of high by reading scripture and praying and such, and then drop into mild depressive states when they aren't. It sounds an aweful lot like addiction to cigarrettes. What do you think?

YES - I beleive people can be addicted to RELIGION.. (maybe not God) but for sure religion...
infact most religions use brainwashing techniques to keep people adicted.. like even telling them they are going to Hell if they stop.. and telling them heaven awaits if they continue...what can be more addicting than heaven??

I think prayer is addictive too.. since people often USE it for releif.. same like they use tabacco or drinking if they are stressed..

It may seem like its similar to any other addiction however its the words you use. No one gets "kind of high" by reading scripture and praying. If done right every religion is different and doesnt have those kinds of effects. Religion is mental not physical.

I don't believe people can be addicted to a god, but I do believe they can be addicted to religion. There is a book in our library called "When Religion Becomes a Drug". I think, religion can become your drug. I do believe in God, our Lord Jesus Christ. I go to church and I believe religion can be healthy and good, but I also believe there was a time when religion was my drug. I was in a bad marriage for far too long because I was afraid God wouldn't love me or accept me if I divorced. I suffered abuse and hardship for years because the church I was a member of said I couldn't go to communion if I divorced. I didn't know there were valid reason I could have divorced my first husband in the church (if I paid them money). No one tells you that; it is all hush-hush. I wanted to please God and be in my church so it was a trade off--feeling good about doing what I felt God wanted me to do verses being with an abusive husband. It was hard to leave the church and hard to leave my exhusband, but I refused to be a second class citizen because I married a jerk who had mental problems and addictions.

Sounds like you are addicted to popping balloons.

However, you ask misleading questions.

Addicted to God relates to some people to high to praying to depression to cigarettes. Or some gibberish like that. Keep your job!!

Many people in many cultures pray to gain guidance. American Indians, Hindu's Buddhists, Christians, etc. I respect that.

Karl Marx called religion the "opiate of the masses." I believe that if you just accept everything that happens in your life as "gods will" that it is an addiction. Individuals have to take responsibility for what happens to them and try to better themselves.

i think a person can become addicted to anything, even an idea.
some are harmful, as in the people who believed in Jim Jones and
committed mass suicide - other ideas, like believing in Santa Claus, is addictive but harmless.

Scriptures and begging is not God, that's religion, people can be addicted to religion. God doesn't separate the human race like religion does. You can't be addicted to yourself.
